My teaching experience started in Graduate school, at Indiana University. I taught voice lessons to a violin major who was interested in taking voice lessons on the side. Since then, I've maintained a voice studio from my home and remotely, as I've traveled and moved around the country for singing work. When students are being lazy I call them out on it by saying something like, "What is that?"  It shakes them up and makes them realize I catch every mistake.  It's done in a lighthearted way so that the students feel comfortable with me as I do not want to drive away students who fear their teacher.  Comfort and discipline are imperative to help them achieve their goals.  If a student feels comfortable with their instrument they are more willing to practice and achieve a higher goal of performance. Strong vocal development is rooted in an extensive understanding of healthy technique. Depending on the level and age of the student we will spend anywhere from a third to half of the lesson working on vocal exercises, which will aid in the student's foundation of developing a strong technical background. For every one of my beginning students who wants to start playing the guitar or singing, I will alway start them off the best and most knowlegable way I know how, which would be a beginners guide. I started with Hal Leonard's Essential book 1 when I first started learning, and I have always used Hal Leonard's Essential guides for my students.  If a student is an intermediate, I can find out where they're at and help them with any handicaps they may have, and point them in the right direction. ***Important note: I am able to teach online via SKYPE or FACETIME as well as in home or studio. I've had quite extensive experiences in teaching. Teaching and tutoring began during my high school days. I would help out after classes or teach piano on the side. Coming up will be my 6th year in teaching piano. I've also tutored my peers all throughout college in music theory, musicianship, and ear/aural training. I've interned at an elementary school for a semester teaching general music. I was even able to get the opportunity to go to Japan for three months and teach English and translate for the United States Navy. Read More
