Roxanne is a singer-songwriter based in Richmond, Virginia. She earned her Bachelor of Music degrees in both Vocal Performance and Music Education from Longwood University in 2017. She has experience singing and performing many styles of music, including musical theatre, classical "opera", jazz, folk, and pop. The goal of good vocal technique is to provide the singer with the tools to express themselves artistically with complete freedom. This freedom of vocal expression is built upon a few basic principles: an efficient breathing process, proper posture, coordinated bodily support, efficient phonation, and an open or relaxed throat. There are countless physical and psychological barriers that singers encounter which interrupt these qualities, and it is the responsibility of the voice teacher to identify those obstacles and provide the student with affirmative solutions to overcoming them. For young children that are just beginning, I like to start them with the Bastien Piano Basics or Piano Adventures series, but I will supplement these books with other material depending on the student's needs. I like to give beginner students little pieces that will help them understand the fundamentals of music in context so that they are still making music while they learn the basics - this keeps them from getting bored! I can help my students improve technique for any genres of music they want with a focus on building a solid and healthy technique.
