I tailor to the desire/ ability level of each student accordingly. Depending on how hard a student is willing to work, I conduct the lessons in an appropriate matter. I learn what the student loves about music and try to work from there so that the experience is meaningful, advantageous, and fun. Sharing music with others is incredibly important to me as a person. The classes are planned based on the individual's voice range. In general, classes begin with breathing techniques, followed by vocal warm-ups. Students at a beginner level will learn German lieder or Italian songs from the "24 Italian Songs and Arias" from the Schirmer's Publishing. I am positive but realistic, flexible but grounded in technique, and create an open, honest, and focused lesson environment. I know the voice is personal for all singers; hearing critique can often be difficult and disheartening. With this in mind, I approach all students differently. My youngest students need very different approaches than the oldest, but I find that connecting, as humans, with all ages is imperative, no matter the person. Read More

It's important to note that for beginner piano students I will use a method, but for more advanced-beginners and intermediate players I focus on chord theory and rhythmic playing, as I am a self taught pianist and do not teach classical piano. Based on a child's interest and personal voice, I recommend pieces of music varying from musical theatre, 28 Italian Songs, Schirmer's Book of Solos, and Hal Leonard's Standard Literature. In our lessons, I teach students to warm up with the proper technique, and so that they may warm themselves up when practicing. We also work on sight reading and dictation to implement musical literacy. Most importantly, we discuss textual meaning and how it relates to our performance skills. Read More
