I believe in positive affirmation and goal setting. My goal with all students is that they enjoy learning, become self-motivated to practice, and consider their musical abilities as a gift which they can choose to share with others whenever they feel comfortable to do so. I have experience using a variety of method books and can easily recommend appropriate materials. I also encourage students to share with me and allow me to help them learn their favorite music, as well, even if that involves writing it out with or for them. Read More

As stated above, I believe that emotion plays an integral role in the mastery and performance of any instrument. Consequently, my teaching style revolves around the use and application of emotion in play. A simple example of this would be a simple discussion of the differences between major and minor chords and the relative emotion conveyed by each, as interpreted by the student. Positive reinforcement also comes into play as each step the student takes towards applying their emotional self to their instrument is recognized and acknowledged. Read More

Making goals that are challenging, but realistic is the best way to grow! I want to help students wrap their heads around how the musical world works and their instruments, and I want to do it effectively and efficiently. Building good practice techniques is a must. Once we have an understanding that the fun comes with hard work and patient progress, the longing for an "over-night mastery" won't be as strong. Read More
Instruments: Voice Fiddle Music
I've been teaching and leading sectionals for four years now, and have taught lessons on both fiddle and voice! It's an honor to be able to spread the love of music to students, as music has changed my life. Consistent practice is important, but so is finding what the student loves to practice. Music should be fun, even as it's hard work! Students are encouraged to write, explore their own creativity, and explore other avenues of music beyond performance, like learning music theory and notation, as well as the basics of music software, if they're interested. I find it so rewarding to help others find joy through music, whether you are a true novice or an experienced singer or player. While I think it is important for all students to achieve our weekly goals and progress regularly, I also try to cultivate an extremely positive environment so that you will leave each lesson feeling encouraged to continue enjoying your music as you work to improve. I believe myself to be a thorough teacher, but will never try to make you feel as though you are being tested. Read More

Students don't learn if they don't feel motivated or enjoy what they are doing. Therefore, I make it a point to set an agenda in each lesson that starts and ends with something fun, and is also predictable so that students know intuitively how to go about their practicing. During each lesson, the student and I set realistic goals for practicing and, despite the popular saying that the more time you spend practicing, the more effective your practice is, I have learned from many students that each student practices and learns from practicing in their own way.
