To begin with, I teach my students how to develop their own warm up method which includes breathing and stretching, vocalizations and good old fashioned solfege. You will learn to understand your own vocal mechanism and how it resonates, as well as how breath support works, and their effects on the singing voice. I usually try to set small goals for my students each week especially for kids as a new instrument can seem like a daunting task. Something I like to do is encouraging a students own creativity and get them to try writing their own pieces or songs. Something I find helps a lot especially with kids is acknowledging their accomplishments because it will encourage them to progress in learning. I meet the student where she/he is. If a beginner, I want her to leave the lesson playing or singing a simple song with a smile. If he is advanced, I want him to leave the lesson engaged even more with the piece we are working on. I use the Faber Book Series for piano teaching and supplement it with my own collection of pieces and teaching tools. This might include a segment of a Beethoven Sonata for an intermediate student, a note-naming App to help beginners learn the language of music, or a version of a student's favorite holiday song to capture their interest. I really started teaching in earnest during the summer of 2012 where I took a job in Michigan as a Piano Teacher Camp Counselor. I'm an experienced singer and teacher and love sharing the joy of discovery of sound and music with children and young people. My degree is in classical vocal performance and I've lived all over the U.S. and maintained a teaching studio over the last 20+ years. I firmly believe in starting with the basics of singing for younger students, however they should have fun as well as learn. Giving them a choice in at least one song we do every so often, to me, is the way to keep them interested in the art.
