Usually, I ask students if they are DYING to learn a piece, and with that selection, I'll look for techniques that can be improved upon. Growing up I was always told “practice makes perfect”, though as I grew I realized music is art and art was never meant to be perfect. I do make sure to encourage all of my students to practice as it does help make you a better musician, but perfection is never the goal.
