For my beginning students, depending on their age, I typically start with a music book, such as John Thompson, Faber or Bastien. I also use a Schaum Note Speller which is a lot of fun and helps progress with music reading. I also love to supplement these books with single sheet music favorites of the student. My teaching started in my undergrad, about 5 years ago when I was required to take a Vocal Pedagogy class as part of my major. From there I fell in love with teaching. I was able to expand on my love as a substitute teacher at Rabun Gap Academy in Rabun Gap Georgia in 2012. There I taught five girls ranging from 8-15. I continued that until 2014, I then took on two colleagues, a girl who was 24 at the time and a guy who was 19 and taught them for a year. Read More

Once I find out their level, I take things one step at a time. I always do warm ups, and exercises based on wha t they need work on. I am patient with the students but I do expect them to come prepared. If they do well, I will absoutely let them know, and if they need to work on something, I politely let them know. My goal is always to make students self-sufficient. I want students to be able to warm-up, practice and improve on their own. I did not become a great singer until I learned how to workout problems for myself. I also want to see students gain confidence and believe that they can perform in public and accomplish their singing goals. I like to keep my students motivated. I like to set goals, not only for myself as a teacher, but also for my students. The reason for this is that if the student is working towards a goal they have a motivation to keep moving forward. An example of this could be the student's goal is to attend an audition three times a year, or they want to learn how to sing for a school talent show. Read More
