I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. If the students' main goal is to shred like Hendrix, then I would start with the basics of blues. I approach teaching in a universal way before specializing on a student's particular interest within music. I try to provide students with a road map so they can determine where they want to go musically. I do this by introducing various styles and techniques that they may not have heard before.
