For beginner and intermediate students: I begin with the end; or rather, an end product. I ask questions like: What sort of music inspires you? What music do you love? What music could you not live without? What music do you aspire to make? Which musicians do you look up to? Depending on the answers, we can figure out a song / artist / style to choose as a goal together. Then I personally learn the chord structure and melody. (In the rare case that they are completely directionless, I'll choose a popular song that they can easily listen to on their own.) For beginning students I like to start with proper technique and basic music theory such as reading music and key signatures. Once the student is comfortable with the instrument we will begin to work or more advance techniques and music theory. I use various instructional books depending on the students level and interest in order to teach them theory and keep them interested and enjoying learning. For adults, I like to find out what their goals with music are, whether it is just a hobby, or something they plan on doing professionally and how in depth they are looking to learn, and then guide my instruction accordingly.
