For beginning students, we will first spend time getting acquainted with the instrument. It takes time for a beginner's fingers to get used to playing a fretted instrument, so getting comfortable is key. I will also start with the basics of reading music. As students progress into the intermediate range, we will start to train our ears with listening exercises, and we will also dive in to more difficult material. Read More

For humor, creativity, and fun are a big part of how I teach. At the same time I am serious about being disciplined in regular practice. I try to find out what my students are passionate about and use that as motivation. One thing I do compared to my past teachers is use technology. Frankly this technology did not exist when I was young! I often "sample" musical phrases and have them play on a loop. Read More

My love of music gos back to when I was a child. I was lucky enough to have support and encouragement through my parents and friends. I was fortunate being exposed to all kinds of music as a high school student in the early 90's. I went to Berklee College of music in Boston, MA from 1996-1997. I transferred to Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY fall 1997. This is where I got to study with Al Gallodoro and developed a love for contemporary classical music. Read More

For beginners I go through the mechanics of the instrument and I try to select easy songs that help in basic instrument navigation. I also use basic sight reading as a method to get to know the instrument. I encourage playing along with recorded music. After basic mastery of the instrument is acheived I try to bring new concepts to the lesson each time. I make personalized backing tracks for each student to practice with. Read More

For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged. I truly enjoy seeing each of my students develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation for music. I believe each student must be taught in a way that allows them to grow and develop at their own pace, and without feeling overwhelmed. Through positive praise and personal accomplishments a student's desire to progress fuels their motivation. By working closely with each student, I find their inspirations and tailor my instruction to their needs. Read More

It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
