I am a compassionate, creative and effective cello teacher who believes that any student with the excitement to learn can succeed. Currently, I am studying at the University of Colorado Boulder with Professor David Requiro to receive my Bachelor of Music degree in Cello Performance. I am sure to acknowledge accomplishments, not only by finding and setting milestones with each student to discover during lessons, but by (as effectively as I can) creating opportunities for students to perform a recital and demonstrate what they have learned for friends and family. For beginning students, I focus primarily on good sitting posture, both with and without the cello. We then focus on developing left-hand shape and function, before learning basic scales and tunes. Through consistent reinforcement, encouragement, and exercises, I help my students to build the solid technical foundation necessary to develop mastery of the instrument. I primarily use the Suzuki cello books, the Schroeder etudes, and the Starker method, however, I frequently make arrangements of popular tunes for students if that is what they are interested in playing. I have the most experience teaching beginner students with the Suzuki method. The main focus of Dr. Suzuki’s method is teaching from a place of love and encouragement. I find this method teaches the technical fundamentals of cello playing while keeping the students progressing at rate suitable for their individual needs. I believe in positive affirmation and goal setting. My goal with all students is that they enjoy learning, become self-motivated to practice, and consider their musical abilities as a gift which they can choose to share with others whenever they feel comfortable to do so. I have experience using a variety of method books and can easily recommend appropriate materials. I believe it's important for students and teachers to work together to set goals for what the student wants to accomplish. In this sense, I can be flexible -- I'm willing to push students who want to be challenged, or be a little more laid back for those who want music to be a side hobby.
