For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and incorporate Position Pieces for Cello by Rick Mooney as they progress to higher levels of difficulty. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. My emphasis is on performance and motivating the student. I set goals for performance at the early stages of study whether it's for family and friends or at an open mic or in church. Without performance as a goal it's hard to motivate the student to practice. I analyze each student's individual learning style whether it's visual or auditory and find ways to help them learn faster and securely. I now own my own vocal company where I promote vocal health and proper voice techniques for singing, stage presence, and performing.
