Mylove for teaching stems frommy desire to pass onmy knowledge of musicto others. Helping others develop a passion for music is somethingIfeel isnecessary tocopein a world that can often be overwhelming without an outlet for expressions, such as music. I have been instructing students in percussion since I was a Junior in high school and taught at the Denny Way Music School on Capital Hill from 2013-2015. I have instructed students, from elementary school to adulthood, in areasincludingmusic theory, ear training and drum performance. Read More

I've been a musical director of K-8th grade private school as well as substituting for local band teachers .During that time I taught children all aspects of music, as well as preparing them for recitals and competitions. For just about any instrument, a key approach of mine is to teach students how to play the songs they love - and then the musical building blocks that make up said songs. Then, I teach the rudiments, patterns, and music theory behind those building blocks, and teach the students to be able to figure this all out on their own in the future through ear-training. I tend to like the Essential Elements series for band instruments, the Alfred books for piano and guitar, the Real Book for a wide variety of jazz repertoire. Read More

I am a very hands-on teacher. We do lots of improvisation and call and response games and sometimes I turn on a record or even bring a guitar to jam with the student. Playing drums is a very visceral, tactile excersize, and I often tell students, "That right there, that is how it's supposed to sound! Memorize that feeling and try to recreate it everytime." I am also a huge advocate of having students listen to as much music as possible. Read More

I am patient and creative in my approach to teaching technique, sight-reading, and musicality. I believe that music performance should be an enjoyable and energizing experience for the performer and listener. I assign practicing material based on the goals, interests, and performance level of each student. While learning individual pieces can be fun, I also focus on giving the student the right tools to become a life-long musician in whatever capacity they choose. Read More

I believe that the first step towards building proficiency in an instrument is having fun with it. I strive to make the lesson space one that promotes positivity, experimentation and excitement - with these as a foundation we can make the hard parts more enjoyable! I take notes on each lesson and have a plan for the next one in mind. However, I always enjoy following a direction that the student is interested in and can cater lessons to personal goals however ambitious or modest. Read More

I'm a musician to my core. I have love music since before I played it. I always like the bass guitar even though I couldn't play one (yet) and I really wanted to play bass once I heard Stanley Clarke play his bass guitar. I was blown away and I had to learn how to play bass guitar, which I did. I have traveled and performed around the world because of music. Read More
