Typically, for students just starting out we would start on standard snare method, working out rudiments and gaining a sense of feel for drumming. This would eventually build up to working with the entire drum set, where we would explore several styles including Rock, Pop, Jazz, Swing, Latin and everything in between. Basically, I would try and find what the student is most interested in and build from there. Everyone wants something else, so it pays to be versatile. Read More

When I see my students improving and chasing their dreams, it fills me with utter joy! I like watching students think critically about what they are doing while working through any incongruencies in their thought process. Each student is different and requires specific teaching styles in order for them to progress efficiently. I like to get to know my students' interests and how they view the world, which I then use to aid them in achieving their goals. Read More

I find the Hal Leonard Series works as a tool for helping students understand musical concepts right away. For students who are more advanced I will plan their lessons based on what their goals are. Every student is different: Some want to compete in recitals, some want to play for their friends and family when they come over, some want to compose their own musical pieces, some people just wanna jam! One of things I that I find discouraging is when teachers stick with one method. Every student is different! As a result, my method of teaching very much depends on the student. If I have a student who is struggling with fundamentals, then we will focus on fundamentals. If I have a student who is struggling with articulations, then we will focus on articulations in lessons. My lessons are very much tailored to the wants and needs of the students. Read More

When starting with a beginner student, I typically start by asking general questions about their interests and the music genres they enjoy. Then, we move on to the basics of maintaining proper form, understanding rhythm, and practicing simple exercises to ensure they start off with the right foundation. After that, we focus on learning the first few basic beats and ensuring they have a good understanding of how they are played. Read More

Having at least some goal in mind and working towards that musical goal will help a student achieve success in whatever they put forth on their instrument of choice as well as music as a whole. It will be ultimately extremely satisfying to express feelings through the notes as we take them from on the page to in the air. Sharing this joy of music will be also undeniably rewarding from student to student as well as performer to audience. Read More

I believe the longevity I've been able to achieve with my students has come from the aforementioned solid foundation mixed with the students genuine interests and ability to see their own progress. I love teaching rock and pop (the stuff so many youngins want to learn) but always find creative ways to sneak in theory and academics. I also like to occasionally provide progress reports or "lesson sheets" to parents or students to make sure everyone is on the same page and still having fun! Read More
