I first started teaching in the summer of 2002 when a friend from church wanted his son to learn drums. His desire was for his son to play one day on the praise team. Thankfully he stuck with it and still plays for the church to this day. That moment made me realize I have a gift for teaching. Throughout college I continued to teach out of my studio and developed my skills even more when I moved back to Maryland in 2009. Read More

My Music teaching experience dates back to my Junior High School days, being only 14 years old, as I began teahing other students who played and performed in school, along with me, and also instructed some of their younger siblings. Encouraing regular practice on a consistent daily basis, is one of the key points that I emphasize to all of my students, as it produces student progress and aquisation of essential Musical literature. For beginning students we usually start with sitting at 2 drum sets and learning to hold the sticks. It's then about trying to get the sticks to strike the drum and practice getting a nice sound on the instrument. Even at a young age, it's important to help the students to think about tone and how we are creating sound on these instruments. I use the same technique on the vibes, learning to hold 2 or 4 mallets and just creating simple sounds. Read More

I began teaching before I attended Berklee College of Music, and have continued ever since. I teach out of my studio and travel to students homes as well. The main points of my lessons are to help you learn what you want to learn and correct any bad habits you might have. Primarily I want us to have fun together and learn in the process. I love listening to music with my students and checking out what interests you, along with recommending some listening choices. Read More

Nothing gives me more joy as a teacher than to have one of my students ask me a question. It sounds simple, but a student with questions is a student who wants to learn. I take this creativity and try to sculpt it into passion. I feel that a teachers job is to inspire, and point the student in the right direction of their goals, rather to be overbearing with a book and pencil. Read More

I focus on nurturing a students natural curiosity, while helping them find the tools to pursue their own musical interests. Many of my younger students prefer to use technology to connect with music (learning how songs are recorded, and the theory behind songwriting), but I also work with more serious students to prepare for college auditions, state/regional jazz band, etc. My methods differ depending on a student's own goals, but they generally all will start with a technical exercise, an exercise designed to get the student thinking critically, and an application of the concepts we're learning. Teaching requires time and effort but it also needs to be fun, therefore my lessons have both components, while setting up short and long term goals we explore music in fun ways that allows for self expression and we stay focused by having a clear goal for every lesson. We will keep a journal where we will be recording our achievements, homeworks and general progress. We will use students ideas for songs they are interested in learning as well as some of my own suggestions for repertoire. Read More
