I've been drumming for 15 years now. All the lessons I've had have been through professional instructors. I took lessons from teachers based in St. Louis, New York and Saint Paul. I partook in concert band and Orchestra from elementary to high school. I really love the work of Dave King, a Twin Cities based drummer. I focus on nurturing a students natural curiosity, while helping them find the tools to pursue their own musical interests. Many of my younger students prefer to use technology to connect with music (learning how songs are recorded, and the theory behind songwriting), but I also work with more serious students to prepare for college auditions, state/regional jazz band, etc. My methods differ depending on a student's own goals, but they generally all will start with a technical exercise, an exercise designed to get the student thinking critically, and an application of the concepts we're learning. For my advanced and more focused students I let them set their own goals and then help them in every way I can. I grew up in a household that flourished with multiple music genres which led me to really try and be versatile in regards to creating music. I first played the drums in middle school where I never read music, only played back what was told. By the time I got to High School, I knew it was necessary to be able to understand theory and by practicing throughout my years in High School, I was able to sustain a successful audition with the school's jazz band. I began teaching private lessons 12 years ago, and always loved to transmit what has been transmitted to me by my great former teachers. I have taught drums to kids as young as 5 to adults as "young" as 50 so far, and I love to adapt my ways of explaining the concepts depending on the age or personality of the student.
