Whether I was teaching Drum Labs at Berklee College of Music or teaching privately in my Boston Studios, there has never been one student who has not moved me to want to do all I can to further their drumming and musical aspirations. I work closely with students in designing a plan that seeks to fulfill both short and long-term musical goals. We work together to contruct a lesson plan that is inspiring, demanding, and achievable. At night I founded my first rock band, Feedback, and later joined WD 40. Selected for the National Youth Orchestra of Canada in 1985, I went on to write scores for string ensembles, a passion I am pursuing as an arranger and composer. My interests are motivated by my passion for world musics and the rhythmic complexity they offer which became the subject of my thesis on Afro Cuban Rumba Guaguanco. My classical and world music knowledge was put to service as a co-producer and director for MuchMusic-Musimax and BRAVO! Read More

I set fun goals and I challenge each student every step of the way to help them reach them. I point out their strengths yet I keep a close eye on their weaknesses and work with them to eliminate any all bad habits in playing instruments. After a few weeks I quiz them and reward them for overcoming any obstacles. I really like to have my students play in front of friends and family after around 3 months of studying. Read More

I like to emphasize what good practice means and how it relates to my students' goals. I then teach larger musical concepts through the pieces of music that my student wants to learn in order to maintain motivation and interest- music is meant to be fun and enjoyable after all! I'm happy to head in whatever direction my student wants, whether thats continuing to learn songs, making thier own music, or delving more into music theory and intrumental techniques. Read More

The student and I will begin to develop a relationship right away. Trust and communication are key. We'll see where the student stands in his or her current playing. They will usually play for a minute or so and talk out loud about their feelings on their playing. This will include thoughts like where he or she starts to get bored, gets stuck, wants to explore more, has trouble, etc. Read More

I have been teaching privately over 19 years, currently online and remotely, as well as almost 10 years at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. The majority of my students have been young, college age students between 17-30 years of age. I have also taught children as young as 4 and adults up to 69. Many of my students have been international, thus I have experience in clearly stating the goals in an understandable and convenient way. Read More
