As a musician and teacher, I primarily view music as one means of artistic self-expression. In my students journey of self-expression, I will help them to learn music history, music theory, and different musical cultures which can influence their perspective on the world around them, as well as how they see themselves. Through music I teach self-discipline, patience, and good practice methods while learning the flute. All students regardless of goals will learn fundamentals of music theory as well as flute tone and technique. My goal is to get teacher and student to always be sensitive to the affective attributes that music has on the listener and the performer. In each flute lesson, I typically begin with a bow as respect for myself and the student. We typically start with tonalization warmup from Suzuki Book 1. The student listens and produces the best sound they can make after listening to me. My goal as a teacher is to help them become their own teacher and evaluate the things they can improve upon.
