Methods are tailored around the individual needs and goals of the student. Fundamentals in music theory are balanced with repertoire and lessons focus on developing practice skills that the student can use outside the lesson. The Suzuki method is ideal for beginning flute students, particularly young students. This approach allows students to become comfortable holding the instrument, producing a solid tone, and training the ear, before introducing notation. For beginning pianists, the Bastien series works well in terms of breaking down repertoire into manageable pieces and marking students' progress in early study. Read More

In our first lesson I usually figure out around what level the student is at, and how much he/she knows. Also what his/her goals are for the instrument and what is hoped to accomplish by us working together. This will help me realize what customized route to take since each student has different plans and goals. I would then start with seeing how their basics are; standing position, finger position, arm position, breathing, muscle tension. Read More

I like to see what the student is currently working on, interested in, or what the school district encourages. I am open to student / parent wishes; I understand that while some student goals are to find a career with music, there are many who are looking to grow within a hobby! There are several method books I prefer for different reasons, so I will do my best after some discussion to find an appropriate fit for the student. If there is an adult learner looking to start, I'd do the same. Read More

My methods are different for every student, but I always start with fundamentals. This includes scales, exercises to improve sound and intonation, reading, writing, improvisation, and most importantly listening. Depending on the path the student choses, some areas will be focused on more than others. I will often introduce more advanced concepts early if the student displays interest in them. I am not the kind of instructor who will say "play your etudes first and then we can talk about improvisation." I almost quit shortly after I started music because I had an instructor with that outlook. Read More

I have lots of experience teaching; I began teaching in my private in-home studio right after college about 6 years ago. I was even interviewed about my teaching and performing for papers in the Delmarva region. In educational outreach I have performed serveral times over the last couple years with the Musical Ambassadors Program that the Richmond Symphony founded, playing woodwind quintet music in schools all over Virginia and teaching the kids about elements of music and the instruments we play. I have had to opportunity to participate in eight Pennsylvania Association for Music Education Band and Orchestra Festivals. Over my years at Millersville University I have participated in almost every ensemble including Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Orchestra, Flute Choir, Flute Quartet and University Choir. Read More

I began teaching privately in the greater Milwaukee area in 2012. With my help and motivation, a fifth grader decided to keep his flute and play in his beginning band, despite his families' circumstances. Later, I picked up an interested eighth grader, who eventually received a Gold at regional solo contest and also made the all-state band. Motivation, "keeping it real", and an upbeat attitude have continued to yield personal and academic results in my studio. Read More
