Born in Tehran, Nava P. started her musical training at the age of 10. After years of training, she later moved to the United States to pursue her passion at the University of Utah under the guidance of Professor Caitlyn Valovick Moore (Piccolo Player in the Utah Symphony) and Lisa Byrnes (Associate Principal Flute in the Utah Symphony) on the Matthews Music Scholarship and the Gochnour Flute Scholarship. My flute students I like to work with the Rubank method books - from beginner to advanced; they offer the most comprehensive approach to playing the flute. I began teaching private lessons in 2005, and I have a variety of teaching experiences. I have since substitute taught every kind of subject, and I've taught general music K-5.  I have mentored conservatory level students when I was in grad school, I taught flute to non-flute music education majors, and I've taught undergraduate students that were pre-music.  I taught 3-8 year olds music at Laurel Hill Summer Camp in East Setauket, Long Island. I've also taught workshops on South American Folk Music with Alturs Duo, as well as flute masterclasses. For beginning students, I start teaching fundamentals through the Rubank Essential Elements book. As students move toward intermediate-advanced levels I introduce the Jeanne Baxtresser book of Orchestral Excerpts and the Taffanel-Gaubert book for technique. I bring in a piece each lesson for sight-reading practice to encourage students to read music on their toes. Additionally, through practicing scales, students learn music theory and notation. At the end of each lesson, I give students a musical goal for their next lesson to motivate active participation in their learning process. Read More

I believe on an emphasis of performance over theory; learning to make a kinesthetic connection with your instrument is most important in developing both a good sound and adequate technique. The value of a good warm-up is most important in establishing a successful practice routine. We are all pressed for time, so I help students focus on the most important elements of breath control, embouchure and articulation at the same time that they are acquiring technical facility through the logical development of scales and arpeggios. For me teaching is incredibly rewarding. It brings me great pride to see my students grow and as musicians and reach their personal goals. For each student I like to set specific, small weekly and lesson goals as well as broader long term goals, with the intention that each small goal will bring us closer to the large one.
