The number one priority I have towards my students is to get them playing a lot of the time, and with proper technique. In the end, it is the student that "teaches" themselves through proper training and not the teacher. The teacher cannot give the student finger dexterity, strength or the ability to read and interpret music directly. The learning process during lessons includes demonstrating, making mistakes and correcting those mistakes so that the student can learn and practice efficiently. Read More

My lessons will be made up of: 1) Custom exercises tailored to your needs and ability. 2) Understanding musical physiology. 3) Ear training. 4) Accessing a healthy technique that does not cause pain. 5) How to share emotion in your performance. 6) Finding your artistic personality. After the lessons you will get feedback from me and steps to practice on your own. I use a variety of teaching books and songs that students find most engaging. Read More

For classical and opera singing, I teach a healthy Bel Canto technique rooted in the Italian school of singing. I am also skilled in teaching SOVT style, but I typically avoid it with beginning singers. For musical theater and pop, I teach healthy belting techniques that preserve vocal quality and focus on a connection to the chest and body, alleviating vocal tension. For my guitar students, I teach fingering techniques and basic chords first, and then I focus on giving each student a basic repertoire--several pieces they already know and like to showcase their abilities and track progress. My teaching experience began during my time spent as an undergraduate in college. Since then, I have become increasingly dedicated and engaged with my commitment to teaching students music / guitar. Consistent practice and commitment to the instrument is always something I encourage in students, something I believe comes naturally when students find themselves constantly enjoying/having fun learning/playing the instrument. Above all, I do believe that having fun while learning an instrument is not only ideal, but necessary. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Piano or Guitar Lessons for the Young Beginner by Andrew Scott and Gary Turner. The student, even at a young age, learns an introduction to music theory. Each concept is taught in a very methodical and step-by-step approach. As a teacher, I am looking to prepare students for ongoing learning for years to come. The language of music can be very confusing and I am looking for ways to minimize those perplexing times. It was, but it was even more fun for me because I was already well comfortable with what they were teaching, so the teacher would use me as an aide to assist the other students with what they were learning. Throughout high school and college I taught the basics to cousins, girlfriends, and buddies on guitar, drums, and even ukulele (which I learned on the fly, but my understanding and past experience with music made it an easy task).
