For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged. I try to tailor my lessons almost like a Doctor sees a patient. Every student is different, I do think it is important to learn to read music. I love music theory and I emphasize learning to love practicing technique. With my beginner piano students I generally use a Hal Leonard series book, but supplement it with a book of piano exercises. With my guitar students it depends on their age and experience, I use a Hal Leonard method book for youngsters and then begin teaching them songs they identify that they really want to learn. I started teaching music lessons privately in my early college years, and subsequently was hired as the bass instructor for a local music school. There I taught one-on-one lessons, as well as group band lessons. I like to approach teaching by finding what style of music the student identifies strongest with and then finding ways to incorporate theory, exercises, and technique into what the student already enjoys. taking music lessons should never be boring, and the easiest way to avoid that is to teach what the student enjoys. I first began teaching privately at age 15 when a wealth of younger and older students at my high school took interest in learning how to play the guitar, and write songs. I believe the only way to truly improve is to practice, and to enjoy the process. Learning music is like learning a language, so it is a process of repetition and study. That, however, does not mean it cant be fun! Read More
