While I taught some guitar lessons here and there in high school, I got my first steady gig teaching at a music store at the age of 19. Now, at the age of 25, I have taught hundreds of lessons, and had jobs teaching at a few different locations. I am constantly looking for better ways to explain things, ways to get students more motivated, and most importantly, ways to make learning music more fun! Read More

A passionate, inspiring, and engaging guitar instructor, I'm a also certificated teacher (Licensure: Illinois Professional Educator License - PEL), trained in providing high-quality instruction to all learners. My love for music developed at the age of seven when I picked up the guitar for the first time. The passion that I had for music and, in particular the guitar, compelled me to learn as much as I could about the instrument from various instructors, fellow guitar players, and friends alike. I would teach my students the basic notes of guitar reading. Once I have fully got my students into guitar reading notes I would then teach them the principals of chord structure and reading chord structure. I would also have them make a plan of what type of song each student would be into and how each and every one of them are going to apply it when playing it. Read More

I began teaching while I was in High School and I would teach the younger students who were freshman and sophomores the tenor saxophone. Once I went to Eastman, I taught several people throughout the course of the four years there. I beleive that, particulalry when teaching the saxophone and flute, a mix of classical fundamental technique is very important as well as incorporating the jazz or rock repertoire. I feel that my skills as a music therapist can be very unique particularly because I can really attend to the needs of the student and adapt the music and lesson accordingly. Read More

For me, the most important thing is that the student and I have fun together. If the student is not having fun, I am also not having fun. It does not matter the age of the student, if anyone in general sees a lesson as a chore, it is doomed to fail. So, my main focus is that I am able to cater my lessons to the interests of the student, making sure that they are engaged and entertained the whole time. Read More

The most important philosophical concept about private lessons is this: proceed in a way that will maximize your potential to achieve an excellent goal that you can call your own. Although I am not limited to one method book or another, I typically use Arban's for trumpet lessons - with other books and repertoire along with it. My background is Suzuki violin, followed by music literacy and transposition. So, whatever method book we select, we must consider basic furthering of direct musical perceptions, in addition to achievement of stated goals. Read More

I personally really enjoy the Hal Leonard series of method books for guitar and bass. I find them comprehensive, but not bloated, and very easy to understand without being dumbed down at all. I plan to use the Guitar Method and Bass Method books, both Complete Edition (comprised of Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced method books), in combination with the Hal Leonard Music Theory book, which is aimed at stringed instruments.
