The best way to ingrain a new concept or idea I have found is to teach someone a practical way in how to use it, usually through learning a new song or exercise which expands their horizons and outlook on things. Especially with adult students I think it is essential to cater to the students' goal. If this involves the need to learn certain techniques, requires knowledge of music theory or the ability to read music, I will advise the student so.
