Being an independent artist myself and having to wear many different hats, I understand the importance of curiosity and versatility. I approach every student differently as each student is a different person with a different background who holds their own unique interests and mode of learning. I don't see any reason why a student shouldn't be refining their songwriting chops while also brushing up on classical piano skills or why a jazz trumpet student shouldn't feel empowered to learn the art of recording and producing. Each student is their own personality and I enjoy seeing how the music making unfolds with them in the process of learning. Each student gets their own unique weekly practice program based on their age and level. I am encouraging and patient teacher. I also see to it that my students get to their own goals by time. I want to make sure that my students have a firm foundation that holds when students advance further in their studies. Read More

I play several instruments and love to play the saxophone. I played saxophone for a year at Oregon State University in the Jazz Combo 1988-89. I took a long 20 year break from music to be a mental health therapist. I have had more time in the past couple of years and have picked up several instruments to heal after recalling past trauma. I find music an excellent way to express my feelings and have been participating in local music jams throughout Oregon. Read More

If you want to become a professional touring musician I will set you on a proper track. If you are looking to be a hobbyist and only want to learn one or two styles while with me, we can arrange that as well. Read More

I want to help my students set goals, both large and small, and help them understand the step by step process to get there. I also emphasize understand why you are playing something. Students often get frustrated with beginner songs or simple (aka boring) exercises. I make a point to explain that we're learning how to learn. It's probably not that essential that you know how to play Red River Valley, but it is important that you go through the process of learning. Read More

I find that fully immersing the student in their chosen style encourages them to practice and makes learning more fun and easy. Not pushing the student too hard is very important, all students learn at their own speed. Working with the students, such as doing improvisation and performing with them can help boost confidence in their abilities and can show students new ways of thinking about their instrument. Being sure the student has realistic goals is also important, this allows them to progress at their own level. Read More
