For beginning students who are younger, I normally start them off by going over the basics of how to play their instrument and basic music theory. I also inquire what the parent wishes their child to learn and get some input from the student as well. For my adult students, I show them the basics of how to play their instrument and I also find out what the student wishes to learn, what their goals musically are. Read More

I have been a mental health therapist since 1992 when I graduated from college. I have owned my own private practice since 2000 to provide mental health treatment, consultation and training to children and families. I have experience teaching children many skill sets under difficult circumstances. I am trained to help children with behavioral issues and developmental delays develop ways to learn even if they have a history of challenges working with an adult. Read More

My methods vary. It depends on what you are looking for with music. I will always set everyone up with the proper techniques and fundamentals, but after that, it is up to you. If you want to become a professional touring musician I will set you on a proper track. If you are looking to be a hobbyist and only want to learn one or two styles while with me, we can arrange that as well. Read More

Being an independent artist myself and having to wear many different hats, I understand the importance of curiosity and versatility. I approach every student differently as each student is a different person with a different background who holds their own unique interests and mode of learning. I don't see any reason why a student shouldn't be refining their songwriting chops while also brushing up on classical piano skills or why a jazz trumpet student shouldn't feel empowered to learn the art of recording and producing. For my youngest students I start with a method book as I think the structure and step by step progress are very helpful. For teens and adults book recommendations are based on each students needs. I let the students guide me with the kinds of music they will really enjoy playing, but I will use the music they like to teach theory, song writing, and other aspects of music. My students don't just learn how to play songs, they learn why music works through the songs they like. Read More

I like to balance musical enjoyment and technical training in my teaching method. I like to see the students making new musical and technical discoveries each week. I encourage them to set goals such as performing in quarterly student recitals and to consider taking part in a Syllabus program that has advancing yearly goals. I use the Suzuki method especially with the younger students and encourage parents to become effective home teachers through coaching and printed materials. Read More

The approach I use to advance student learning is fun and laid back - yet direct and studious. I believe in the power of mentoring students and adults. Every student is different and has their own way of learning and growing, even as we get older. There is always room for improvement. At your first lesson we can talk about what makes sense in terms of practice week to week and will continue to see what it takes as time goes on. Read More
