For older students, I integrate a more disciplined routine and, as earlier mentioned, allow their goals and intrests to inform the lesson plan, writing out excercises personally.  Generally the first third of the lesson is spent on fundamentals and warm up, the middle on the material we are working on, and something fun and/or new at the end (kind of like the scrimmage at the end of soccer practice). For beginners, I like to either start by asking their favorite kind of music, bands, etc. I can also try showing them cool, guitar friendly music that they may be interested in. From there, I develop a personalized syllabus for the student based in their preferences, strengths and weaknesses.
