I started teaching guitar in High School in 2009, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 8 years. I took private lessons for 7 years from four different guitar instructors, so I know what works and what doesn't. My number one focus as a teacher is keeping my students engaged, and doing my best to ignite their passion for the instrument of guitar. For beginning students both children and adults, I typically start with Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence books. Once my younger students have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their first recital performance. My teaching experience started when a good friend introduced me to a family that has two daughters that were interested in learning music. The 11 year old wanted to learn how to play the drum set and the 14 year old was interested in playing the guitar. I found the joy of teaching music to children on these instruments was a very challenging but rewarding experience that lasted for 3 years. This gives an opportunity to build a really solid foundation of music theory and music reading at the same time. Older beginners I take through a checklist of basic theory fundamentals of my own creation, basic chords and basic scales. Then we choose a song to learn that applies that foundation.
