Once the student has progressed and has a good grasp of the fundamentals, I will bring in other repertoire appropriate to their level. I am a singer-songwriter, engineer, and producer from Youngstown, OH who has been playing music for over 15 years. I attended Youngstown State University and Anderson University studying music education and business. I have had multiple different instructors throughout my life, and some of them seem to have had their own agenda and what they wanted me to be learning. Positive reinforcement is everything! While there will always be room for improvement and growth, it is crucial to acknowledge successes throughout each lesson. Learning a new instrument requires patience, practice, and determination, and reinforcers can be a huge motivator (I know they were for me when I was learning). I try to focus on the students interests as much as possible. Lastly, I use rythym training a lot with all my students. If it's not played in time, It's not music yet. We will work together to get it where it needs to be! I use real drum loops and other media for this. This dramatically increases the students feel for the pulse of the music.
