For voice students, we usually warm up, do technical exercises working on varying registers and techniques, and then work on repertoire. I often find the passages in a particular song that the student is struggling with and focus in on those, finding exercises to guide the student. I do believe in the fundamentals of music and ultimately, no matter what you hear, learning music is not re-inventing the wheel. There is technique, reading music and understanding the basics of how the particular instrument works. I like the Essential Elements for Guitar or bass for guitarists and bassists and Alfred's Piano method books. Ted Reed's Guide to Syncopation is a good drum book. Ultimately I like to get the know the student as much as I can as soon as I can so I can help them get to what they want as soon as possible with a few laughs along the way. Read More

I use written materials including songs that have already been written by other composers, as well as my own etudes so that the lesson can be properly practiced. Depending on the individual student's technical ability and style of music they wish to learn, I write practice exercises specifically catered to them. The same applies for my vocal students. We will start with the fundamentals of our vocal instrument, air flow, breath support, and the components of the body that make up the vocal passage so they can understand how singing actually works. We will do vocal warm ups and exercises to open the voice and prepare them for singing. When they are ready, we will work on songs and vocal delivery as well as other techniques such as vibrato, solo's, harmonies, etc. Read More
