My music teaching experience began over fifteen years ago when my first student was recommended to me by my high school music director to teach a younger student privately. Since then, I have taught people of all ages drums, guitar, ukulele, piano, world percussion, and even some violin. I believe nothing is more rewarding than having a relationship to music, and teaching music has given me the opportunity to share the joy of music with others. Read More

I typically like to start lessons with a warm up, and this is a good opportunity to see what level a student's technique is at. I immediately address anything that I see to be problematic in the student's technique, and we start working on ways to improve it as soon as possible. These can be simple exercises and when I see that my students are improving in these exercises and that their technique has gotten better, I always make sure that they also notice the difference and give them a sense of accomplishment. Very individualized instruction. The focus of the lessons depends on the student. The goal is to use the guitar or bass as a vehicle of self expression. Bringing creativity, in the form of writing or improvising, to the lessons enriches the experience of playing any music. I believe in music as an aural language. I believe there is equal benefit in transcribing recorded music as from reading from the printed page. Read More

Before that, I was employed by New York Edge (formerly Sports And Arts In Schools Foundation) as a Teaching Artist/Mentor. Specifically, I worked with a program within the school called MAD (Music, Art, and Design) Academy. In this program, I mentored an incredibly creative and diverse group of young artists as they pursued careers in the arts. Read More

Positive reinforcement is key. I never learned from the mean or the overly strict teachers. In fact those teachers pushed me in the opposite direction of wanting to pursue music professionally. By going at the pace that is comfortable to the student, and praising them at every hurdle they encounter, the progress made can be exponentially greater than if the student is rushed to prepare a piece of music they don't truly care for in the first place.
