I try to provide a good balance between working on theory, technique, and repertoire, and working on aspects that might be more fun like a students favorite song. This allows the student to make progress while also keeping motivated, which is really important for long term goals. For children, the balance has to lean more towards the more entertaining aspect, because of the reduced attention span. I actively work towards getting the younger students to increase their tolerance towards difficult challenges so that they can make more overall progress. Read More

After teaching for 12 years I don't have a fixed method. I have categories of students, from children who are trying to function in a band setting, to children who are trying to develop a musical or compositional talent. I take particular joy in teaching adults who believe it is too late to achieve levels of technical proficiency that would make them proud. My journey from classical music to jazz through pop, swing, rock, soul and folk has taught me how to blend in with any style, and my classical education has given me the necessary toolbox to communicate about advanced theoretical concepts with students who are interested. I've spent over half my life as a musician and I hope to help you have a lifelong love of music as well! Growing up in Upstate New York, I started on Cello when I was 9, but quickly made the change to Electric and Double Bass. I started my collegiate music education at Nazareth College of Rochester in 2014 as Classical Double Bass major. After a year there I transferred to SUNY Purchase to pursue a degree in Jazz Studies. For trumpet students I initially provide my own material, based on the exercises which I have found to be beneficial in my own playing. Early on, I'll ask most students to play a recording of one of their favorite songs, which we'll use to improvise to as well as for ear-training purposes. As soon as the student has learned enough notes, we'll begin playing songs. I firmly believe that developing a good sense of a singing style is the foundation for good playing. Read More

For beginning students, I ususaly start with the first level of method books unless they have other music instrument experience that is relevant. Fundamentals will be introdruced in an appropriate order while simultaniously adding in bit by bit songs and etudes that will push the student to realize all the techniques they are learning. My love for playing guitar/teaching how to play the guitar dates back to when I was a young man learning how to play from my instructor. My teacher instilled in me what it meant to play guitar and gave me the confidence to do the same for others. Music has always played a crucial role in my life and it has gotten me through some tough times. My instructor helped me to realize the importance of what an instrument can do, not only for boosting my confidence, but also for how I live my life. Read More

Immediately I'd like to know why the student is pursuing the given instrument, then sort of gauge a level of passion, drive, talent, etc. and then work from there. With guitar and piano there are several routes one could choose for performance, and each one has different teaching fundamentals. Someone who gravitates more toward Jazz will need a very strong base in musical theory, where as someone who wants to play classical might need stronger technical work. Read More
