I've been teaching on and off for about the past 10 years. I graduated from Mcnally/Smith College of Music in 2005 and have been teaching ever since. Sometimes my schedule has been more focused on performance as I have done national tours and exstensive recording but I've always been passionate about teaching. I've always enjoyed watching the "lights turn on" as someone gets a new idea or concept and the doors open for them creatively. Read More

My style of teaching is personal and caring. Whether my students develop a desire to pursue music beyond our lessons, I care about their happiness and personal success in life. I develop a relationship with my students and I really enjoy it when I hear that they used a concept I taught them in our music lessons for something beyond music. I at least hope to instill a strong understanding and enjoyment of music in each of my students which they can share with the people in their life. Read More

By High School, I had already formed three bands, and composed & recorded a solo album on my own. In 2013, I started my music degree at the University of Colorado Denver, and graduated in 2018. I’ve learned many different instruments since I got involved in music, but guitar is my main instrument. However, what I find most gratifying about music is the combination of multiple instruments together, forming an arrangement. Although my goal is to let you lead the way as far as what you’d like to know, I believe that understanding how your instrument can be placed into the larger picture is a key aspect to learning music, and very enjoyable. I blend the tried-and-true poise of classical technique with holistic approaches to satisfy two purposes: 1) the traditional desire to hone skill with practice and discipline, and 2) the psychological development of the student's independent musicianship. Music without expression is only sport. While technique, exercise, rigor, and history are essential in order to develop the deepest possible understanding of music, I aim to go beyond this to shape the independent expressionism of each student. I like to focus on songs that students are interested in. I also recommend certain books to be used as supplementary learning. For children guitarists I recommend Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course. For older guitarists I recommend Hal Leonard's Guitar Method. For children pianists I recommend Faber Piano Adventures. Read More

I do not give my students minimum practice times every day, while I do present them with a recommended schedule. Instead, I teach them how to make time during the day, how to adjust their attitude towards practicing, and exactly what obstacles they will need to overcome in disciplining themselves to practice. In turn, my students get more out of their practice than they would by me simply telling them to do 30 minutes a day. Read More

Everyone has heard horror stories of music lessons that they were forced to take with teachers who forced students to play music they were not interested in. I whole heartily believe that this is the fastest way to severe a student's relationship with creating music. The musical education process should be one that the student enjoys and wants to nurture to become the best musician they can! Depending on the level of the student and the instrument, I begin with fundamentals such as scales and note names, to foster a better musical understanding, while simultaneously including music that the student can enjoy that ties in with the fundamentals we are currently working on.
