Growing up in Memphis, I began playing the piano at age 6. After moving to bass guitar a few years later, I finally picked up my brother's acoustic guitar and never looked back. At Vanderbilt University, I studied music and English and began gigging professionally in Nashville while still finishing my degree. I've worked as a singer/songwriter, touring artist and session musician in both Nashville and New York City. I'm proud to call Memphis home again when I'm not on tour. Read More

Depending on the level of the student, I will work with what they already have and expand based on the genres they want to learn. If the students' main goal is to shred like Hendrix, then I would start with the basics of blues. I'd explain the blues through terms of the major scale and western music theory, which makes it accessible to students would otherwise have no concept of the genre. Read More

For beginning students, such as children I focus on developing strong fundamentals such as air control, mouthpiece blowing, and hand-eye coordination with their instrument. This slowly moves into rhythm and pitch reading for beginners. Intermediate to advanced students build on these fundamentals and also have the privilege of learning repertoire with performance possibilities. For adults I like to see what suits their personal interests and then work together to achieve their goals through mentorship and collaboration. Read More

I value musical literacy very highly and spend a great deal of time focusing on the fundamentals of reading music. I believe that if one can read the music and hear it in one’s head that anyone can play it. In addition to literacy I teach my students to establish a daily checklist of long tones and lip flexibility. I make my lessons engaging for everyone and am flexible to the students needs regardless of ability levels. Read More

I like to keep hours at an hour, but I understand every student has different needs. Every lesson will begin with a warmup and the understanding of sound production. I like to look at the physical and mental aspects of what produces sound. After sound, it is crucial to work on scales-- as scales are the foundation to all music. After scales, I like to spend time of technique and etudes. Read More
