My teaching experience began when I was in grad school, where I taught a few students at a local high school. Since moving to the KC area eight years ago, I have been consistently teaching and gradually building my private studio, which now has over 20 students! I love working with young singers (specifically grades 8-12) and helping them find the potential in their voices.  I have encountered the full range of ability levels, from very experienced (had lessons before, sung multiple solos in school choir, had lead roles in musicals, etc.) to complete novice (no lessons, no choir experience).  My overall approach to lessons is the same, regardless of ability level: consistent improvement from week to week using vocal exercises, songs, and an exploration of breath and the physicality of singing. Instrumental Conducting, Secondary Music Methods, Instrumental Techniques, and Educational Psychology were some of the courses that prepared her to become a more knowledgeable teacher. My approach to coaching students is focused on 5 important areas; embouchure, tone quality, intonation (pitch), technique, and time. Memorization of key signatures and scales are very important to the student's overall success. I utilize a method for memorizing key signatures which will decrease the memorization time and increaseretention. My teaching experience dates back to my early 20s and my college days. i started teaching private lessons part time, for some family and friends etc, and have been teaching and meeting new people and students ever since. the number one factor in learning your craft is to dedicate yourself to regular and consistent practice or rehearsal into your schedule and stick to it if you want to be successful. and i will always encourage my students to maintain a healthy balance of rehearsal into your daily life. i can't emphasize this enough; especially the younger students, to build a routine, as it tends to really help the student progress and gain a passion for the their craft. i encourage my students to enter competitions and recitals, when the time is right of course.. as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. i am my own students resource and im always willing to help out anyone i can and im always looking to bring on new students of all ages! During lessons, I typically focus on a balance of instrumental technique and music reading. However, Im flexible and happy to adapt to each student's preferences. If a student prefers to prioritize one skill over the other, I will gladly tailor lessons to match their goals. Additionally, we work on developing and applying effective practice strategies to ensure steady progress. I employ the use of scales and harmonizing techniques if so desired, but mainly focus on what the student would like to be able to accomplish in his or her time with me. I like to let them pursue their own directions while overseeing that they learn the fundamental aspects of their chosen genre or genres. Learning and especially music should maintain FUN as a central priority, because without excitement over the topic and enthusiasm in development, it becomes easy to get bored and walk away from the activities.
