I approach teaching by working closely with each student to figure out their goals and interests. I introduce concepts gradually, building upon the foundation we have built in past lessons. I set realistic practice goals, understanding that we all have busy schedules. I usually assign 1-3 concepts for students to work on at home, at their own pace. Watching students grow is wonderful and immensely gratifying. I always make sure remind students of their growth and accomplishments while urging them to believe in their potential to take on new challenges. Read More

I am a graduate student at SUNY Purchase, and will be receiving my Master's degree in Music Performance this spring. I received my Bachelor's degree in Music Performance from SUNY Fredonia in 2016. Throughout my studies, I have been fortunate enough to perform with the Western New York Chamber Orchestra and learn from renowned flutists -- including Gary Schocker, Ian Clarke, and Tara O'Connor (my current teacher). I am relatively new to the Hudson Valley, and I am looking forward to building a studio of passionate and dedicated students in my new home! Read More

There are a variety of suitable musical aides to use in teaching. Many different publishers and authors of study books are available and I am familiar with more than several of them. Age and maturity/attention span of the student will help to determine which books to select. Often a generally creative adolescent will prefer picture books of music to begin with. Adults can be engaged in fundamentals of music theory with piano playing in mind and receive more conversational instruction as appropriate with adult music to practice and play. Read More

I teach in a firm, thorough style, and prefer to emphasize the importance of basic body position and movements through both technical exercises and the repertoire of piano pieces. Reading music is another ability I believe is essential and I always teach this skill to students of any age. Read More
Instruments: Voice
I have been teaching voice lessons for almost ten years to students of all ages, skill levels, and preferred genres. Many of my students have been successful on stage, in auditions, competitions, and in gaining acceptance into music schools across the country. My focus is to guide my student in finding their own voice in a healthy way. Every student has a different goal in taking voice lessons. Many have wanted to persue music as a career in some form or fashion; others just enjoy singing and would like to realize their full musical potential. Read More

For Piano Students: I usually use the Alfred Piano Course book series, unless a student has already established themselves in a different lesson book series, are familiar with it, and wish to stay with that series. There is an adult series of Alfred Piano Course lesson books as well, so I am able to gear lessons for adults towards their teaching series as well. I usually teach beginning to intermediate level piano students, so these books are extremely helpful to those students because they teach proper fundamentals of piano playing, as well as theory, ear training, and technique. A principle that I have lived by in the 45 plus years that I have taught, is that I am teaching the STUDENT as an individual with a particular personality, learning style, level of patience, tolerance for making mistakes and openness to trying new things. I do not teach MUSIC; I use it as the vehicle for learning. When a teacher really understands the nature of the student and shows his/her commitment to making every lesson a successful and happy experience for him/her, then the process of learning to play an instrument becomes a mutual and fulfilling experience.
