Once the student has grasped the basic fundamentals and note reading, I begin to introduce solo repertoire from the Suzuki String method. The number one priority I have towards my students is to get them playing a lot of the time, and with proper technique. In the end, it is the student that "teaches" themselves through proper training and not the teacher. The teacher cannot give the student finger dexterity, strength or the ability to read and interpret music directly. Typically, I favor using traditional curriculum for beginning students (Alfred, Faber, Bastian). As a student progresses we typically incorporate Clemeneti sonatinas and the students favorite pop/modern songs. When a student achieves an advanced level of difficulty curriculum is purchased depending on the student's goals, college aspirations, and learning objectives. For beginning students I like to begin with learning scales, becoming aware of the circle of fifths, introducing different types of bow strokes, bow control, and other essentials along with simple Suzuki book solo pieces. Once the student has progressed a little further, I will introduce more difficult solo repertoire that I feel will help the students techniques while also showcasing their abilities.
