The handouts are usully about warm-up routines (excercises of tone, fingering techniques, tonging excercises, vibrato and so on). It depens on the level of the students. Like most trumpet teachers, I introduce the Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet, an everything-you-need-to-know book that the student will use throughout their trumpet playing career. However, I also incorporate a variety of other method, solo, and duet books throughout lessons with an intent of maintaining variety, both of material and the methods that the material presents. Each lesson begins with reviews of fundamentals (long tones, breathing, lip slurs, etc.), sight-reading practice and instruction, and instruction on the solo piece that the student had been assigned the week before. My style is very relaxed and fun and I make the lessons very student focused. I do not believe in a 'monkey see monkey do' style where I simply show the student and have them repeat the concept or technique, but rather a discovery learning approach where I provide the needed support for the student to learn and apply the concepts. I earned a bachelors degree in music composition and studied classical guitar in college. I taught private lessons off and on for several years before beginning teaching at a Music Studio in Columbus, Ohio. While there, I taught many guitar and ukulele lessons, and even started a ukulele club. While I was working at the studio teaching lessons at night, I was working on a masters degree in education.
