I have taught the drums in a variety of settings for 15 years. In Australia I worked for the South Australian Government in the Instrumental Music Service for 3 years. I provided group drum lessons to students ranging from elementary to senior high school age with a total of 40 lessons each week, at 10 different schools to over 100 students! I have been a teacher for the last 7 years: having worked at after-school programs, I have learned how to understand the psychology involved in teaching and how to get students motivated but sparkling their curiosity based on their personal experiences. I encourage students to practice on a consistent basis for as much time as they can, but most importantly, I encourage them to listen. The art of listening is much understated in music education at times and is really what made a difference in my playing, so I like to include listening exercises that go along with technique in order for the student to develop a well-crafted musicianship. Beginning students I will start with Hal Leonards beginning guitar and school of rock tablature so theyre learning both tab and notes. More advanced students will learn jazz out of multiple different books. We can start the lessons usually with warmups on scales, arpeggios and chords then for the rest of the lesson, focus on material.
