For beginning students who are children, I start with the Faber Piano Adventures which includes the theory book, so all is learnt together. The keyboard is learnt from the first lesson. Depending on the age of the student, most just play he two black notes with the white notes of CDE. Doggy D is in the middle. I am a lyric soprano, and have been performing and teaching for the past 35 years. I have performed opera, oratorio, Gilbert and Sullivan and concert repertoire. My particular interests are early music and 20th century art song. I teach at several different schools, and enjoy working with ages 13 through adult. I trained originally as a classical guitartist, and take guitar students from age 10 through adult. For beginning students, we work out of beginning method books such as Essential Elements or Standard of Excellence. This is supplemented with worksheets and personalized exercises specific to their needs. As the student advances, we will begin to introduce duets to begin to understand and play harmonized music. Often they already have music that will work, to which I will add developemental studies of various sorts.
