I always begin a lesson with a warm up. This can look different depending on the student, however I emphasize the importance of warming up your lungs, fingers, embouchure, and body. I then move to scales. For my beginner students, I use methods to learn the quick fingerings that is needed for basic fundamentals as well as exercises that assist in how we blow into the flute. Having a comfortable, supportive environment for private lessons is very important to me. Nothing is worse than being scared of your private instructor! I like to create a warm environment for my students where they feel safe taking musical risks. I definitely believe in goal setting with my students. My methods are very creative and different for each students, depending on what the student wants to learn. I have a notebook for each student to keep track of how the student is progressing. I love to keep the lessons engaging and fun, sometimes I like playing duets or just sight read for fun.
