When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
Since the age of 15, i knew I wanted to make an honest living with my passion and love for drums. I began teaching in Williamsport, MD in 1993. I walked into this music shop to buy some drumming gear for an upcoming gig and the owner was frantic over his drum teacher leaving suddenly. I inquired and he had me play a kit sitting in the showroom and he hired me on the spot. So, I started with 21 students handed to me. In all essence, I began teaching drums because I wanted to yet I walked right into it one day.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
It seems the drums chose me long before I consciously chose them. My earliest memories, as far back as age two, are filled with the rhythmic clanging of pots and pans, my makeshift drum set echoing through the house. This innate drive to create rhythm, to explore the percussive possibilities of my surroundings, was an undeniable force from the very beginning. My older sister played a pivotal role in shaping my musical journey. She was my first rock and roll guru, introducing me to the iconic sounds of Kiss, Van Halen, and even the country twang of Eddie Rabbit. Her passion for music was infectious, and I eagerly absorbed everything she shared. Watching her play guitar ignited a fire within me, a desire to not just listen to music, but to create it myself. By age eight, I was already channeling my inner Alex Van Halen, replicating his thunderous drum parts on the living room floor with pillows and blankets as my makeshift kit. My sister's influence extended beyond introducing me to specific bands; she instilled in me a deep love for all styles of music. This eclectic exposure broadened my musical horizons and fueled my desire to explore the rhythmic tapestry of diverse genres. It was this early immersion in music, combined with my innate rhythmic drive, that led me to the drums. The instrument felt like a natural extension of myself, a way to channel my energy and express my creativity. The drums didn't just become an instrument; they became a part of me, an essential tool for self-expression and a lifelong passion.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Marlon, your initial drum teacher from the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, instilled in you a fundamental principle that would shape your entire drumming journey: timing is everything. He emphasized that before mastering intricate rhythms or complex techniques, a drummer must first develop an impeccable sense of time. This foundation would serve as the bedrock upon which all other skills would be built. Marlon's approach went beyond simply keeping a steady beat. He taught me to internalize rhythm, to feel the pulse of the music in my core. This deep understanding of timing allowed me to: Develop rock-solid precision: I learned to lock in with other musicians seamlessly, creating a tight and cohesive groove. Explore rhythmic nuances: I became attuned to the subtle variations in timing that give music its character and feel. Master different styles: With a strong foundation in timing, I was able to adapt to the unique rhythmic demands of various genres. But Marlon's teaching extended beyond technical proficiency. He immersed me in the rich history and cultural context of different drumming styles. He explained the origins and purpose of each genre, from the driving rhythms of rock and roll to the intricate polyrhythms of Afro-Cuban music. This knowledge deepened my appreciation for the instrument and broadened my musical horizons. In essence, Marlon's teaching provided me with the tools and inspiration to forge my own path as a drummer.
