My experience has taught me that it is important to be flexible depending on individual students' learning styles and needs. For example, if I have a young student and they don't know how to read music, we will play rhythm clapping games so they can understand how to read rhythm rather than trying to read rhythm and play the rhythms at the piano, simultaneously. For voice students, I teach basic breathing exercises and fun, sustainable and memorable warm-ups. From there, I begin to prep them for their first solo performances. I will start new students, especially young students, with folk songs, games and exercises to train the ear, sense of rhythm, and acting muscles, prepare them to be able to read and understand musical notation, and encouragement to perform in a solo capacity when possible.
