I have been band director in the public school system for over 20 years and an adjunct professor in college for several years. Since 1993, I have been teaching private lessons to low brass students ranging from grade 5 through college. Students under my director have been successful in District, All-Region, All-Area, All-State and Texas UIL competitions. I have many years working with students from all backgrounds and ability levels. For beginner students, i typically like to work with the tried and true Suzuki books, as well as theory practice with Essential Elements for violin, and the Faber books for pianists. I will begin to introduce solo work as skills build, but we will always be working on something that the student genuinely is interested in. For adults/ intermediate or advanced students i try to find what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep lessons fun and engaging while also slightly challenging to further understanding of technical abilities. My methods vary with the age of the student. For beginners who are children, I usually start with Alfred's Basic Piano Library, which I try to go through most of that series. During that time, the children will occasionally play anything they wish to play that is interesting or fun to them. I firmly believe in establishing long term goals for which the class is being taught and developed. For beginner students who are children, I tend to lean into the music that they are more fond of listening to and develop an atmosphere of interest while using various colors, singing methods, rhymes that will grasp their attention and in the long run develop their ear. For young adults and up, I develop my lesson plans accordingly depending on their level of musicianship. Read More
