Before heading off to college and over course of two summers, I had the opportunity to study at the prestigious Berklee Five Week Summer Jazz Performance Program. For the second summer, I auditioned and earned a half-tuition scholarship. I actually hold a degree in science rather than music but I just celebrated my 10th anniversary as a guitar instructor as well as my 22nd anniversary as a guitarist. For beginners and young children, I generally demonstrate and have them practice breathing and certain terminology before we begin singing. Once we begin singing, I use the keyboard and have them practice matching pitch. We then do warm ups, and I teach them a couple phrases that will help with pronunciation and shaping their mouths to make certain sounds. Long-term goals may have to do with technique--for voice, examples may be releasing tension or singing with proper breath support. Short term goals are more linked to repertoire and can be technical or musical. An example on the piano may be playing through a piece with a particular metronome marking. I LOVE teaching and sharing the richness of our noble instrument. I have several decades of professional orchestral experience and private studies in music composition and performance practice. I am currently principal bass in a local orchestra and ensemble coordinator for a chamber orchestra. Injury prevention is a key component to my teaching.
