I believe a major key to success in learning music is finding the methods and concepts that click for you. There are infinite ways to think of a phrase or harmonic relationships and I work to learn which connections make sense to you. One major takeaway from my own education has been how to listen to my playing objectively and free of self-judgement. I constantly encourage my students to develop a similar mindset, since I see self-encouragement as much more important than encouragement from a teacher or an audience. Read More

Every student works at their own pace and I allow for a lot of flexibility in my lessons. However, once the student has communicated their long term goals for the guitar, realistic goals are set between each lesson. I assign projects to work on between each lessons usually a mix of technical practice, such as left hand and right hand techniques, and musical works the student is interested in. I find that students work well when they are working on things that interest them. Read More

I have recently started teaching in the last year on zoom and in person. A lot of my gigging and recording experience I have been able to incorporate in to my students lessons. I think one of the most important aspects of teaching music is how to learn. Every student learns differently. Knowing if they learn well by sheet music, by ear, or just working on technique. I enjoy teaching, putting students on the right track with what they want to learn, with the fundamentals of guitar in the beginning and that they enjoy it as well. Read More
Instruments: Clarinet
To be a better musician requires a strong solid foundation of the fundamentals. Clarinet maintenance, equipment, reeds. Body posture, finger position, embouchure. Musical understanding and expression, scales, etudes, and other repertoire. When I meet a new or prospective student, I first evaluate where in their training are they coming from. Beginner - Amateur - Advanced and so forth. Depending on what I initially hear by their playing I would advise them accordingly and inquire what they hope to achieve out of the lessons. Read More
Instruments: Clarinet Music
My teaching experience began as community outreach & engagement with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra's "Crescendo" program. I ran group clarinet lessons and performed in Boston Public Schools. I entered a similar relationship with teaching when I relocated to Chicago in 2016 to play with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Upon my return to Boston, I began teaching privately and joined the faculty of the North End Music & Performing Arts Center where I am a Woodwind Teaching Artist for the Eliot Band Program, as well as teach private lessons. For me, the most important thing is not to teach what I know. The most important thing is to teach my students to generate knowledge for themselves. In addition, the change, the result or the progress I seek is that which exerts music through its transforming power of the human being. My style is interactive. The dynamics of the class we make between the student and me. Of course, I lead the class, but the questions are very important. Read More
