I cover both the physical skill of creating a musical sound and building a song from its melodic and rhythmic core. In doing this both children and adults are tutored in proper positioning of their hands and bodies to create a comfortable and relaxed posture of playing. I cover a variety of notation methods including tabulature, staff notation and chordal diagrams. The focus is on melodies the student is already familiar with, engaging their ear, eye and tactical senses. Read More

Yet I am still a professional musician. What I am saying is that you can be successful in learning to be a musician if you have attention issues. As a middle-aged adult I have (just a few years ago) been diagnosed with ADHD, which explains my entire life of practicing music! I am not a psychologist, but I know how it feels and I have studied enough teaching and psychology to understand that things like this are not a permanent barrier to being a musician, even a great musician. I emphasize reading, because it gives each student the tools to learn independently and unlocks worlds of information. If a younger student aspires to play in school bands, this knowledge will equip him or her to this end and place the student ahead of his or her peers. I also emphasize feel, because this goes way beyond the mere reproducing of written notes into the very heart of music. I teach students how to analyze and map songs, so they may take those tools forward and utilize critical listening skills. Read More

I have been teaching in the private setting since the mid-90s, which I began as an undergrad in Music Education. I taught for about a decade in public schools in Kansas, teaching both band and vocal music to students of all ages at various times. I chose to return to school in 2009 and completed two Masters degrees in performance in classical and jazz trumpet over the next four years. Read More

My teaching experience began when I was first selected as the concertmaster of the Baldwin Wallace Symphony Orchestra four years ago! It was my responsibility to organize and run sectionals, where I instructed my peers in the art of refining, practicing, and mastering the challenging orchestral repertoire that we tackled on a regular basis. The following year, I started teaching children between ages ten and twelve. My main objectives were (and still are) the correction of form, the establishment of excellent fundamentals, and helping my pupils understand what's so great and exciting about playing music.
