After high school, I went to Northern Oklahoma College where I played saxophone and clarinet and was awarded the Outstanding Instrumentalist award two consecutive years. After graduating, I attended Oklahoma City University where I played as 1st chair clarinet in the Wind Philharmonic and Lead Tenor in the Jazz Ensemble. I base my teaching methods on the student I am teaching. For students that are children at a beginner level, I typically begin with the essential elements of creating vocal foundation which I draw from many sources. Once we have set a good foundation, we tend to begin working on repertoire that is appropriate for the level at which they are singing, using those songs as learning opportunities. Older children just beginning to enter the world of music will begin with the fundamentals of musicianship, sound, and breathing. From there I will progress to rhythm, pitch, and notation. When these skills are mastered I will get the students comfortable with their instruments and begin playing. Students that have a background in music with their instruments will be assessed to determine the level of teaching required.
