When first introduced to a new student, I typically have them play for me to assess their abilities on the instrument as well as their knowledge of general music theory. Once that is done, I am then able to recommend the appropriate materials that work best for the student. For students at any level, I try to see what they are interested in musically and fit time in their development to work on the things that get them excited about music and also help them progress on their instrument. At Northwestern, it was my responsibility, on top of earning my degree, to teach lessons to non-music major students. These student came from all backgrounds and experience levels, and their fields of study included math, computer science, drama, and more. Along with my other students, who I've taught privately for years, they all made improvements in performance practice, musicianship, and, of course, their voices. The principles of singing are universal for every voice, and their so simple that adjustments are easy to make based on voice type, experience level, or any other factor. Read More

I strike a balance between pushing for skill and making sure a student has fun. That balance rests on communication how invested, listened to, and motivated they feel. To establish that communication, we'll talk each week about progress, concerns, and triumphs. I also try to find the roots of problems. The reason you're squeezing the bow could be the same reason you're playing faster than the metronome, and I'll be the annoying (metaphorical) speed bump making you slow down and relax. Read More

My style consists of trial and error, accompanied with determination of student preferences. I've experienced a range of different students, from beginner to advanced, as well as children who were special needs students. Initially, once a students preferred style of music is deduced, I'll find songs within the students preferences, skill range and or even construct a song specifically for that student to learn fundamentals. Whether a student needs work on technique, rhythm or practical knowledge of music theory, there's no end of methods to utilize to help a student attained to their desired level of proficiency.
