Theory is emphasized as well as technique for both the piano and voice student. Most voice students will get a basic knowledge of music reading skills while piano students tend to have a bit more in depth studies. I use many books to start students and usually spend most of the lesson in the Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet (Cornet). I like students to study classic trumpet solo's literature. I think my folks realized I was serious, so they bought a little Woolworth's "kiddie" kit and set up drum lessons when I was about 7 and learned to read and write jazz and rock music with my instructor until I was 16.
