I always start by asking the student if he/she has any goals or upcoming performances they'd like to concentrate on. If so, we focus mainly on that goal, while also incorporating vocal exercises and other methods to continually improve the voice. Otherwise, we will start with mainly vocal exercises (which will grow in difficulty as we master the easier ones), and after a few weeks, start applying what we've learned in the exercises to some songs (usually folk songs, art songs, Broadway, occasionally some opera). My teaching journey began in high school when I led sectionals for younger classes and elementary programs, as I already knew I wanted to study music education. I started teaching private lessons to a few students in my free time, and this early experience helped me develop effective teaching techniques. Since then, I have taught private lessons in the Kansas City area through my own studio and traveled to schools to teach lessons during the school day, as well as small cello classes outside of school hours. My goal as a private educator is to find what each of my students enjoys about learning music. When sequential learning is introduced, along with material that motivates, this encourages dedication and progression. I believe most students learn best when they feel they have input in some of the learning process. My students are also encouraged to participate in competitions and recitals. Having a goal to work towards aids in accomplishment and motivation. Read More

I love to play the guitar! I write songs, teach music, and lead worship. It's too good not to share! I played trumpet in school from fifth to eleventh grade, and then picked up the guitar after my senior year in high school. I immediately began writing songs. At about age thirty I decided to go to school to learn how to be more professional in my songwriting presentations. I realized how little I knew about the thing I was gifted with so much. Read More

As a former certified school teacher my focus is on laying the right foundation for a lifetime of musical learning and enjoyment for the student. I want my students to develop skills in all aspects and styles of playing so that as their preferences progress they will be equipped for all genres and styles. However if an adult or intermediate level student wants to specialize I can accommodate them. That's why I suggest they incorporate both note reading and chord theory to their scope and sequence of study. Read More

I don't believe in a one size fits all mentality for music education, I've often seen this approach derail students from enjoying the process and eventually terminating their relationship with music overall. Students are a case-by-case basis, and in that regard, each lesson is catered to the students actual goals and interests. I believe in training our ears and our sense of rhythm to a point where the student can figure things out and make artistic decisions on their own and use lessons, less as a tutorial, but as a source of inspiration to pursue the things that brought them here in the first place.
